Honduras
The Honduran economy is highly dependent on remittances that come mainly from the US, which represents 25% of GDP, with a projected growth of 8% per year. 72% of the population is at poverty levels and a quarter of the population has high risk of food insecurity. Honduras has also been facing serious effects of the drought, which has restricted the production of energy and basic grains in its territory. Honduras faces the challenge of strengthening its resilience to climate change and improving governance and the quality of institutions, including transparency and independence of constitutional powers. CREPAIMASUL
The Cooperativa Regional de Productores Agroindustriales de Marañón del Sur Limitada (CREPAIMASUL) specialises in organic cashew nuts; the Enterprise Programme has supported the improvement of processing quality and management capacity. Now Crepaimasul Cooperative, where 70% of the jobs generated are for women, exports cashews primarily to German markets. More than 1,200 families depend economically on cashew cultivation for the cooperative in the southern zone of Honduras.
All businesses in Honduras supported by the programme are now profitable and have doubled their revenues in the past year.
